MARCH 2008

March 29

My two brothers and I fished at two different private sand pit lakes in the afternoon. We probably caught over 50 largemouth bass between 10 and 19.75 inches. We caught these bass around drop offs next to points, edges of deep flats, and underwater brush piles in depths of 25 feet or less. We were using a 1/4-, 1/2-, and 3/4-ounce jig with a Chompers Twin Tail Grub, 1/2-ounce Chatterbait, 1/4- and 3/4-ounce Lytle's Secret Tail Spinner, and a Rapala Deep Diver X-Rap jerkbait.

In the evening we fished at Enders Reservoir for a few hours on the face of the dam. We caught eight walleye between 14 and 18 inches using a 4-inch swimbait, and a Berkley Gulp Minnow Grub on a 1/8-ounce jig head.

March 28

I fished at two different private sand pit lakes in the afternoon. I caught largemouth bass between 11 and 19.50 inches using a 1/2- and 3/4-ounce football jig with a Chompers 5-inch Twin Tail Grub, and a 3/4-ounce Lytle's Secret Tail Spinner. They were caught along the drop off next to points, underwater brush piles, and edges of deep weed beds in depths of 25 feet or less.

March 24-27

I fished at three different private sand pit lakes in the afternoon. I caught four Master Angler largemouth bass (23.75, 21, 20.75 and 20 inches), and a Master Angler walleye at 29 inches. I also caught around another 40 or more largemouth bass between 13 and 19.75 inches. I caught these fish on a 1/2- and 3/4-ounce football jig with a Strike King Rage Tail Craw, and a 3/4-ounce Lytle's Secret Tail Spinner. They were caught around deep points, underwater brush piles, and edges of deep weed beds in depths of 25 feet or less.

March 18-21

I fished at three different private sand pit lakes in the afternoon. I caught three Master Angler largemouth bass (two 21 inches, and one 20.75 inches), and a Master Angler crappie at 15.25 inches. I also caught around another dozen or more largemouth bass between 12 and 19 inches. I caught these fish around underwater brush piles, deep weed beds, and next to points in depths of 25 feet or less using a 1/2-ounce football jig with a Strike King Rage Tail Craw. The surface water temperature on these sand pits lake is in the lower to mid 40s.

March 10, 11 & 13

I fished at a private sand pit in the afternoon for a few hours. I caught four nice largemouth bass between 15 and 18 inches, including one I lost next to the boat that was over 20 inches. I caught these fish on a 1/2- and 3/4-ounce football jig with a Strike King Rage Tail Craw around deep brush piles next to points in depths of 15 to 30 feet. The secret to catching these bass in this cold water period is slowly crawling the football jig a few inches on the bottom and through the brush piles, and pausing for a few second before moving the jig again. The surface water temperature on this sand pit lake is around 40 degrees.
