JANUARY - FEBRUARY 2008

February 16, 22-24

My two brothers, a friend and I fished Medicine Creek (open water below the dam of Medicine Creek Reservoir) and caught good numbers of white bass between 8 and 15 inches, wipers up to 18 inches, about a dozen crappies between 8 and 12 inches, 8 walleyes between 10 and 20 inches, 3 largemouth bass at 18, 12, and 10 inches, plus good numbers of small catfish and freshwater drum. We caught these fish around deep holes in the creek using a Lytle's Secret Tail Spinner, a small tube bait, and a jig head with a Berkley Power Bait Realistix 3-inch Minnow, and a Berkley Gulp 2-inch Grub.

February 15

I took my two-man boat to Red Willow Reservoir to fish some open water for a few hours in the afternoon. I caught crappies up to 12 inches along the creek channel edges in depths of 30 to 45 feet using a jigging Rapala.

February 9

My brother Tim and I went ice fishing at Enders and Swanson reservoirs. We caught white bass up to 13 inches, channel catfish up to 20 inches, two walleyes up to 14.50 inches, and a 10-inch yellow perch. We caught these fish around underwater humps, and a dike next to a river channel near the dam area in depths of 30 feet or less using a 1/4-oz. Lytle's Secret, and a homemade jigging spoon.

February 7, 8

I went ice fishing at two different private sand pit lakes in the afternoon. I caught approximately 20 or more largemouth bass between 9 and 15 inches, 30 or more crappie between 8 and 12.50 inches, and around 15 bluegills up to 8 inches. I caught these fish on a 1/8- and 1/4-oz. Lytle's Secret, and a small homemade jigging spoon around underwater brush piles, and next to long points in depths of 28 feet or less.

February 3

My brother Tim, and I went fishing at Medicine Creek Reservoir. We caught about a dozen crappies between 11 and 13.50 inches, another dozen or more bluegills up to 8 inches, four small channel catfish, three drum up to 14 inches, and a 12-inch wiper, We caught these fish using a Lytle's Secret, and a jigging spoon in a cove next to underwater brush piles, and a creek channel in depths up to 24 feet.

February 2

My friends and I went ice fishing at Red Willow Reservoir in the afternoon. We caught channel catfish up to 20 inches, crappies up to 13 inches, and a 15.25-inch walleye around main lake points, and next to underwater trees in depths of 18 to 30 feet using a 1/4-oz. Lytle's Secret, and a jigging spoon.

February 1

I guided a client from Colorado on the ice at Red Willow Reservoir. We caught 30 or more channel catfish between 2 to 5 pounds, 15 or more crappie up to 12 inches, around a dozen bluegills up to 8 inches, and a yellow perch. We caught these fish on a 1/4-oz. Lytle's Secret, and a jigging spoon depths of 18 to 30 feet around main lake points, and back in a cove next to underwater brush piles.

January 27

I went Ice fishing at a private sand pit lake in the late afternoon for a few hours. I caught approximately 15 or more largemouth bass between 10 and 16 inches, and a 22-inch channel catfish. They were caught on a 1/4-oz. Lytle's Secret next to an underwater brush pile in depths of 15 to 22 feet next to a point.

January 19

My brother Tim and I went ice fishing at Swanson Reservoir in the afternoon. We caught white bass up to 13 inches plus a 22-inch wiper. We caught these fish on a dike next to a river channel near the dam area in depths of 27 to 34 feet on a Lytle's Secret and a homemade jigging spoon. The ice thickness is about 12 inches.

January 13

My brother Tim and I went ice fishing at Red Willow Reservoir in the morning, and at two private sand pit lakes in the mid afternoon. We caught crappies up to 13 inches, bluegills up to 9 inches, white bass at 14 inches, 3 largemouth bass between 12 and 15 inches, and a small walleye. My brother was using a small homemade jigging spoon, and I was using a Lytle's Secret around points, an underwater hump, and next to underwater brush piles in depths of 15 to 40 feet. The ice is averaging around 10 inches thick.

January 12

I went ice fishing at a private sand pit lake in the afternoon and caught a Master Angler largemouth bass at 20.25 inches. I also caught crappies up to 14.50 inches and bluegills up to 9.50 inches. I caught these fish on a Lytle's Secret and a Rapala Jigging Shad around points in depths of 15 to 32 feet.

January 10, 11

I took Doug Stange (Editor-In-Chief for In-Fisherman magazine) to Red Willow, Swanson, and Medicine Creek reservoirs to do some filming on ice fishing. We caught white bass up to 16 inches, crappies up to 12 inches, yellow perch up to 11 inches, a Master Angler channel catfish at 33 inches, plus smaller catfish. Doug caught his first wiper through the ice. We caught these fish on a Rapala Jigging Shad and a Lytle's Secret around main lake points, edges of creek channels that swing next to points, and a dike next to a river channel near the dam in depths of 20 to 36 feet.

January 3, 4, 6, 7 and 8

My friends, my brother and I fished at Swanson, Red Willow and Medicine Creek reservoirs in the afternoon. We caught crappies up to 14.50 inches, white bass up to 16 inches, channel catfish up to 26 inches, walleyes up to 16 inches, and a 17-inch wiper. These fish were caught in depths of 12 to 34 feet around main lake points, and next to the river channel near the dam, using a Lytle's Secret and a jigging spoon. The ice thickness is averaging between 8 to 10 inches on the main lake.
