SEPTEMBER 2003

September 28

My brother Tim and I went fishing at a private sandpit in the afternoon. We caught largemouth bass between 14 and 19 inches, four walleye between 16 and 24 inches, crappies between 12 and 15 inches, and one channel catfish at approximately 26-inches. We caught these fish on a dropshot rig using small 4-inch plastic worm with a ReelBait Walleye Flasher Jig and Berkley Bungee Leech on the tag end of the line, and a plain jighead and crawler in depths of 10 to 20 feet along the deep drop off. I also caught another five largemouth bass between 15 and 18 inches on a lipless crankbait that were suspending over deep water chasing baitfish up to the surface.

September 26, 27

I guided the same group both days, and we caught good numbers of smaller wipers up to 18-inches and white bass up to 13-inches on medium diving crankbaits and lipless crankbaits. We caught these fish around main lake points and humps next to deep water. The surface water temperature on the main lake is in the low 60s and the water clarity is averaging around 8 inches.

September 23, 25

I went to Red Willow Lake for a few hours in the afternoon. I'm still catching smaller wipers and white bass on crankbaits around main lake points and humps. I also caught a 23-inch largemouth bass pitching a 5-inch tubebait around standing timber back in a cove. The surface water temperature is averaging around 63 degrees, and the water clarity is 4 to 8 inches. Click to view photos from this trip.
