JANUARY - FEBRUARY 2003

February 8, 9

My brother and I went ice fishing at Red Willow Lake and caught crappies up to 12 inches, a few bluegill up to 8 inches, and a few largemouth bass between 10 and 13 inches. We caught these fish on dropshot rigs with the Tiny Shad Assassin, and with my brother's homemade small jigging spoons. We fished around the underwater brush piles located at the mouth of the bay in 15 to 20 feet of water, and also on secondary points halfway back in the bay in 6 to 12 feet. The ice is four to five inches thick in the bay, but the main is unsafe with some open water.

February 7

I went ice fishing at Red Willow Lake with a friend, and we caught good numbers of crappies up to 12 inches on dropshot rigs with a 1.5-inch Tiny Shad Assassin, and my brother's homemade spoons. We fished around underwater brush piles located at the mouth of the bay in 15 to 20 feet of water. The ice is approximately four to five inches thick in the bay, while most of the main lake is unsafe with less than two inches of ice.

February 1

My brother and I went back to the same sandpit and caught good numbers of crappies up to 13 inches, six largemouth bass up to 16 inches, and a few small bluegill on dropshot rigs with a 1.5-inch Tiny Shad Assassin. We were fishing from the shoreline.

January 30, 31

I went fishing (open water) at a private sandpit and caught good numbers of crappies up to 12 inches and a few largemouth bass between 12 and 15 inches. I was using a dropshot rig with a 1.5-inch Tiny Shad Assassin. These fish were caught around underwater brush piles next to the drop-off in depths of 20 feet or less casting from the shore.

January 27-29

I went ice fishing at Red Willow Lake with a friend. We're still catching good numbers of crappies up to one pound around underwater brush piles located at the mouth of a bay in 15 to 20 feet of water. We also caught fish on a secondary point half-way back in the bay in 6 to 12 feet. We caught these fish on dropshot rigs using a 1.5-inch Tiny Shad Assassin and my brother's homemade small jigging spoons.

The ice is approximately five inches thick in the bay, but most of the main lake is unsafe with open water.

January 24

I went ice fishing at Red Willow Lake with a friend and we caught good numbers of crappies up to one pound on dropshot rigs using a 1.5-inch Tiny Shad Assassin. We fished in depths of 15 to 20 feet around underwater brush piles located close to the mouth of a cove. The ice is approximately 5 to 6 inches thick in the bays, but on the main lake the ice is less than one inch thick with some open water.
