I took my
brother, Rod, to Red Willow Lake and we caught good numbers of
walleye between 14 and 16 inches including a Master Angler I
caught on a jerkbait (30", 9 lbs 12 oz.) on a main lake point.
We caught the other walleye on crankbaits and my brothers homemade
lures he designed similar to the Strike King Rocket Shad. We
also caught good numbers of wipers between 14 and 20 inches,
crappies up to 12 inches, white bass up to 13 inches, largemouth
bass up to 16 inches, and smallmouth bass up to 14 inches. These
fish were caught on topwater plugs, crankbaits, plastic jerkbaits,
dropshot rigs with 3" Berkley Bass Minnow, and the homemade lures
in depths of 20 feet or less around main lake points, flats with
weed beds, underwater humps, secondary points in coves, and along the
dam areas.
May 29
I guided
on Red Willow Lake and we caught one Master Angler Wiper (27.50") on
a topwater plug, additional wipers between 14 and 20 inches, white
bass up to 14 inches, crappies up to 13 inches, largemouth bass up
to 17 inches, smallmouth bass up to 15 inches, and one 20-inch
walleye. They were caught on topwater plugs, jerkbaits, plastic
jerkbaits, dropshot rigs with a Berkley 3" Bass Minnow, crankbaits,
and shiners around underwater humps, main lake points, secondary
points in coves, and along the dam areas in depths of 20 feet or
less. Morning and evening was best for topwater plugs.
May 27
I guided
on Red Willow Lake and we caught one Master Angler Wiper (25") that
struck on a buzzbait in the morning next to a main lake point. We
caught good numbers of largemouth bass between 10 and 18 inches on
jig 'n plastic trailer combos, Texas rigged plastic baits,
crankbaits, and dropshot rigs with a Berkley 3" bass minnow back in
coves and main lake timber. We also caught good numbers of
crappies on the dropshot rigs with small plastic baits next to a
secondary points back in a cove in depths of 20 feet or less,
and one 20-inch walleye on a Texas rigged tubebait next to a
weed bed
in approximately 8 feet of water in a cove.
May 25, 26
I guided
on Red Willow Lake and we caught good numbers of white bass, wipers,
crappies, largemouth bass, and walleye on dropshot rig with a small
plastic minnow, shiners, and jigging spoons. They were caught around
main lake points, underwater islands, and secondary points in coves
in depths of 20 to 30 feet. In the evening on May 26 I caught a
Master Angler wiper that went 25" on a topwater plug next to a main
lake point.
May 23
I guided
on Red Willow Lake and we caught two Master Angler wipers (25" and
24.50") plus others between 14 and 22 inches, white bass up to 14
inches, and crappies up to 12 inches. They were caught on jerkbaits,
dropshot rigs with a small plastic minnow, and 3/4 oz. Lytle
Glitters Spoon worked along the windy shorelines around main lake
points, flats, secondary points in coves, and underwater humps in
depths of 20 feet or less. The surface water temperature is
approximately 60 degrees.
May 22
I guided
on Enders Reservoir and we caught good numbers of wipers between 14
and 23 inches, white bass up to 15 inches, and smallmouth bass
between 12 and 16 inches. These fish were
caught on jerkbaits and live bait (3- to 4-inch shiners) around rocky
points and along the dam areas in depths of 20 feet or less. The
surface water temperature is in the upper 50s.
May 20
I took a
friend largemouth bass fishing in the late afternoon at Red Willow
Lake, and we caught over 20 largemouth bass between 12 and18 inches.
They were caught flippin or pitchin jig 'n plastic trailer combos
and Texas rigged tube baits around any cover (laydown trees, stumps,
weed beds and rocks) along the shoreline back in coves in depth of
10' or less. During the last half hour of daylight we caught good
numbers of white bass up to 12 inches and smallmouth bass on
topwater plugs around main lake rocky areas. The surface water
temperature on the main lake was in the mid 50s, and back in the
coves it was in the upper 50s.
May 19
I guided
on Red Willow Lake and we caught one Master Angler largemouth bass
at 22 inches, plus others between 12 and 18.50 inches,
wipers between 14 and 22 inches, white bass up to 12 inches,
crappies up to 12 inches, northern pike up to 32 inches, and 1a 4"
walleye. These fish were caught on jerkbaits, Strike King Rocket
Shad, dropshot rigs with 3" Berkley Power Bass Minnow, and shiners
worked along main lake points, flats, and in coves. The surface
water temperature is in the upper 50s.
May 17, 18
I guided
on Red Willow and we caught three Master Angler fish (2 largemouth
bass at 21" and 20.25" and 1 northern pike at 38"). We caught wipers
between 14 and 23 inches, additional largemouth bass between 10 and
19 inches, white bass up to 13 inches, crappies up to 12 inches,
and smallmouth bass up to 14 inches. These fish were caught in
depths of 15 feet or less on jerkbaits, dropshot rigs with a
three-inch plastic minnow, and topwater plugs along main lake points
and flats next to deep water, coves, and along the dam areas. The
main lake surface water temperature is in the mid 50s.
May 16
I guided
on Red Willow Lake and we caught four Master Angler fish (3 wipers
at 29", 26" and 25" and 1 northern pike at 42"). We caught over 20
additional wipers between 14 and 23 inches and good numbers of white
bass up to 12 inches. These fish were caught on suspending jerkbaits
and a Strike King Rocket Shad worked along the windy shorelines
around main lake points, creek channel edges, flats, and near the
dam areas in depth of 25 feet or less. The surface water temperature
is in the mid 50s.
May 14
I guided
on Red Willow Lake and we caught three Master Angler fish (29"
walleye, 36" northern pike, and 32" channel catfish). We caught
another 12 walleye between 14 and 24 inches, largemouth bass between
12 and 18 inches, wipers between 13 and 22 inches, white bass up to
12 inches and one smaller northern pike around 24 inches. These fish
were caught on jerkbaits worked along main lake points, flats,
secondary points in coves, and along the dam areas in depths of 15
feet or less. The surface water temperature is in the low to mid
50s.
May 13
I guided
on Enders Reservoir and we caught three Master Angler wipers (25",
24.50", and 24"), plus good numbers of wipers between 15 and 23
inches, walleye between 14 and 16.50 inches, white bass up to 12
inches, smallmouth bass up to 13 inches, and one northern pike at 30
inches. These fish were caught around main lake points, flats next
to deep water, and along the dam areas in depths of 20 feet or less.
Most of these fish were caught on jerkbaits except six out of nine
walleye were caught on a deep diving crankbait. The surface water
temperature in the mid 50s.
May 11
I took
Larry Porter (Omaha World-Herald outdoors editor) and Daryl Bauer
(Nebraska Game and Parks Commission's Lakes and Reservoirs
Program Manager) to Enders Lake in the morning and we caught two
Master Angler wipers (24.50") plus good numbers of wipers between 15
and 22 inches, white bass up to 15 inches, largemouth bass up to 18
inches, and smallmouth bass up to 14 inches. These fish were caught
on suspending jerkbaits along the windy shoreline around main lake
points, flats, and along the dam areas in depth of 20 feet or less.
The surface water temperature is 49 to 50 degrees.
In the
afternoon we went to Red Willow Lake and caught two Master Angler
largemouth bass (5.25 and about 6 pounds) plus other largemouth
between 12 and 18 inches, white bass up to 12 inches, smallmouth
bass up to 12 inches, wipers between 15 and 22 inches, and one drum
around 15 inches. They were caught on suspending jerkbaits along
windy shorelines near main lake points, flats, and along the dam
areas in depth of 20 feet or less. The surface water temperature was
approximately 50 degrees.
May 10
I guided
on Red Willow Lake and we caught two Master Anglers largemouth bass
(21.50" and 20.25"). We also caught good numbers of largemouth bass
between 12 and 19 inches, walleye between 14 and 18 inches, two
northern pike (32" and 34"), white bass up to 12 inches, and crappie
up to 12 inches. These fish were caught around main lake points,
flats next to deep water, and secondary points in coves in depths of
20 feet or less. The crappies were caught on a dropshot rig with a
3-inch plastic minnow. The other fish were caught on a suspending
jerkbait. The surface water temperature is in the low 50s.
May 9
I guided
on Red Willow Lake and we caught four Master Angler fish including
three largemouth bass at 23 inches (8 lbs. 7 oz.), 22" (just over 7
lbs.) and 20.25" (5.50 lbs.), and one wiper at 25 inches. We caught
over 20 additional wipers between 20 and 23 inches, another 15
largemouth bass between 12 and 18 inches, and good numbers of white
bass up to 12 inches. These fish were caught on suspending jerkbaits
worked along main lake points, flats, creek channel edges, and along
the dam areas in depths of 20 feet or less. The main lake surface
temperature is in the low 50s.
May 8
I guided
on Red Willow Lake. Strong winds with gusts up to 40 mph and higher
gust kept me from fishing the areas I wanted to fish, but we still
caught wipers between 18 and 25 inches (one Master Angler at 25
inches), white bass up to 13 inches, largemouth bass between 12 and
19 inches, and a few crappies up to 11inches. These fish were caught
on suspending jerkbaits along the windy shoreline around main lake
points, shallow underwater humps, and secondary points in coves in
depths of 10 feet or less. The key to catching these fish was
finding the baitfish (gizzard shad) in the areas we fished. The
surface water temperature on the main lake averaged 53 degrees
today.
May 7
I guided
at Red Willow Lake and we caught seven Master Anglers fish (six
largemouth bass at 22.25", 22", 21.50", 21.25", 21", and 20.50" and
one wiper at 26"). We're catching good numbers of largemouth bass
between 10 and 22.25 inches, walleye between 15 and 26 inches,
northern pike between 26 and 32 inches, wipers between 15 and 26
inches, crappies up to 12 inches, white bass up to 13 inches, and a
few smallmouth bass up to 15 inches. The fish are being caught on
jerkbaits and dropshots rigs with plastic baits worked along the
main lake points, flats, humps, coves, and the dam areas in depth of
20 feet or less. The surface water temperature is in the lower 50s.
May 6
I guided
on Red Willow Lake and we caught three Master Anglers fish (two
wipers at 26" and 24.50'', and one northern pike at 38"). We're
catching good numbers of wipers between 15 and 26 inches, largemouth
bass between 12 and 19 inches, walleye between 14 and 22 inches,
northern pike between 24 and 38 inches, white bass between 9 and 13
inches, and crappies up to 11 inches. These fish are being caught
around main lake flats, points, underwater humps, and coves in
depths of 15 feet or less on suspending jerkbaits. The surface water
temperature is in the upper 50s.
May 5
I went to Cedar Bluff lake in Kansas to fish a Kansas Bass Anglers
Association tournament. My fishing partner and I placed 7th out of approximately70 boats. We caught five largemouth bass
weighing a little under 15 pounds. We caught them on jig 'n craw combos and Texas rigged plastic baits worked along laydown
trees near shoreline drop offs.
May 3, 4
I guided on Red Willow Lake and we caught six Master Anglers
fish (three largemouth bass at 22.50", 22", and 20.50",
two wipers at 26.50" and 24.50", and one northern pike at 37"). We're catching
good numbers of largemouths between 12 and 22.50 inches, wipers between 15 and 26.50 inches, northern pike between 20 and 37
inches, and a few walleye between 15 and 23 inches. The fish are being caught on suspending jerkbaits worked along main lake
flats, points, and along the creek channel where it swings next to shoreline in depths of 20 feet or less. The surface water
temperature is averaging in the low 50s.
May 2
I took my
Doctor fishing again at Red Willow Lake in the afternoon and we
caught two Master Angler fish - a 25-inch wiper and a 21-inch
largemouth bass. We caught over 20 largemouth bass between 12 and 21
inches with most in the 15- to 18-inch range. Our six
wipers measured 25, 22, 20, 18, 16 and 15 inches. We caught one
walleye at 22 inches. The largemouths and the walleye were caught on
a suspending jerkbait along creek channel edges next to
standing timber in depths of 15 feet or less. The wipers were caught
on a jerkbait in depths of 10 feet or less along flats next to deep
water. The surface water temperature is approximately 53 degrees.
