MARCH - APRIL 2002

April 30

I took my Doctor fishing in the afternoon at Red Willow Lake and we caught six walleye, including one Master Angler measuring 30 inches and weighing 11 pounds 14 ounces. The other five were between 22 to 25 inches. We also caught good numbers of largemouth bass from 12 to 19 inches, northern pike up to 32 inches, and wipers up to 22 inches. These fish were caught on main lake points, flats next to deep water, and in coves. The main lake water temperature is approximately 53 degrees, and back in the coves it's in the mid 50s.

April 29

I went fishing at Red Willow Lake in the afternoon and caught wipers between 22 and 26 inches including five Master Angler fish at 26", 25" (2), and 24" (2). They were caught on a jerkbait in depths of 15 feet or less along main lake points, shallow underwater humps, and main lake flats dropping off next to deep water. I caught some largemouth bass including one Master Angler measuring 23 inches and weighing 7.50 pounds. I also caught northern pike up to 34 inches. The pike and largemouths were caught around the mouths of the coves on a suspending jerkbait. The main lake surface water temperature is in the low 50s.

April 27

I fished in the Angling Nebraska Bass Tournament at Keith Sebelius Lake in Kansas and finished in 3rd Place with five largemouth bass weighing 12.90 pounds. I caught the bass on jig and plastic craw and texas rigged plastic baits around laydown trees along the creek channel.

April 25

I guided on Red Willow and we caught two Master Angler awards fish -  a 29" wiper and a 20.25" largemouth bass. We caught largemouths between 12 and 20.25 inches, walleye between 14 and 17.50 inches, and a few northern pike up to 25 inches on suspending and deep diver jerkbaits. We worked the baits along main lake points and flats near deep water in depths of 15 feet. A few largemouth bass were taken on secondary points back in coves on the jerkbaits.

April 23

I went fishing at Red Willow Lake in the afternoon and caught wipers up to 26 inches, largemouth bass up to 18 inches, and one Master Angler northern pike (36"). These fish were caught on a suspending jerkbait along main lake points and flats near deep water in depths of 15 feet or less. The main lake surface water temperature is approximately 54 degrees.

April 22

I took a friend fishing late in the afternoon at a private sandpit, and we caught largemouth bass between 15 and 22 inches on spinnerbaits and tubebaits. They were caught slow rolling the spinnerbait along the first drop off in depths of 6 to 12 feet, and flippin' the tubebait in cattails along the north shore. We also caught three Master Angler white bass (18" ,17.5", and 17") on a jerkbait worked along a sand flat in water 10 feet deep or less.

April 16 & 18

I took friends fishing in the afternoon at Red Willow Lake. We're still catching wipers up to 23 inches, white bass up to 12 inches, and largemouth bass up to 18 inches. The fish were caught with suspending jerkbaits along main lake points, underwater humps, main lake flats that drop off next to deep water, and secondary points in coves in depths of 20 feet or less. The main lake surface water temperature is in the mid 50s.

April 13-15

I went fishing at Red Willow Lake and caught good numbers of wipers ranging from 15 to 29 inches (13 Master Anglers at 29", 27", 26" (2), 25" (3), 24" (6), white bass up to 12 inches, and largemouth bass up to 19 inches. They were caught on jerkbaits, rattletraps, spinnerbaits, and dropshot rigs with a 3" Powerbait Bass Minnow in depths of 15 feet or less along main lake points, shallow underwater humps, and main lake flats that drop off next to deep water. I also caught largemouth bass around the secondary points with brushpiles in coves (8 to12 feet deep)  on tube baits, jerkbaits, and slow-rolled spinnerbaits.  The main lake surface water temperature was in the upper 50's.

April 12

I guided on Red Willow Lake in the afternoon for crappies. We caught fish up to 11 inches using dropshot rigs with shiners and small plastic minnows ( Shad Assassin and Powerbait Bass Minnow ). We fished back in coves around underwater brush piles next to secondary points.

April 10, 11

I went largemouth bass fishing in the afternoon at Red Willow Lake and caught largemouths up to 19 inches on crankbaits. The bass were caught along the edges of secondary points in coves and next to creek channels that swing next to the banks in depth of 5 to 15 feet. The surface water temperature is approximately 50 degrees on the main lake and mid 50's back in the coves.

April 3-6

I'm still catching crappies up to 11 inches using the dropshot rig with a 3-inch Powerbait Bass Minnow and Shad assassin. I'm catching fish along the creek channel edges in 35 to 43 feet of water, and back in coves next to secondary points. On April 5 my brother Tim, his friend and I caught walleye between 14 and 27 inches on crankbaits along the dam in depths of 15 feet or less. The surface water temperature is in the low 40s.

April 1

I took a Nebraska Game and Parks Commission fisheries biologist fishing this afternoon at Red Willow Lake. We caught good numbers of black and white crappies up to 11 inches using dropshot rigs with a small plastic minnow (1.5 and 3 inches). We fished along the creek channel edges (35 to 42 feet) and back in a cove near a secondary point with brush piles present in 15 to 22 feet of water. The main lake surface water temperature is approximately 42 degrees, and back in the cove it was in the mid 40s.

March 29

I took a friend fishing this afternoon at Red Willow Lake. We caught good numbers of crappies up to one pound using the dropshot rig with a small plastic minnow (1.5 and 3 inches). The fish were caught along a secondary point in a cove, and along the creek channel edges (35 to 42 feet). The surface water temperature is in approximately 42 degrees.

March 28

I went fishing at Red Willow Lake in the afternoon and caught good numbers of crappies up to one pound and white bass up to 3/4 pound along the creek channel in depths of 35 to 42 feet. I also caught crappies and a few largemouth bass (13 and 14 inches) along a secondary point in a cove (10 to 24 feet). The surface water temperature on the main lake is approximately 40 degrees.

March 27

I guided on Red Willow Lake in the afternoon and we caught good numbers of crappies and white bass weighing between one half and one pound along the creek channel (35 to 42 feet) and along a secondary point in a cove (15 to 24 feet). We used a dropshot rig with a 1.5-inch shad assassin and 3-inch Powerbait Bass Minnow. The main lake surface temperature is approximately 38 degrees.

March 23

I took my brother Tim, my son Jeremy and his friend fishing at Swanson Lake in the morning, and we caught nine flathead catfish weighing between five and thirty-five pounds, and one channel catfish weighed approximately eight pounds. We used 3/4-ounce and 1-ounce jigging spoon along ridges near the river channel and next to the dam area.

In the afternoon we went to Red Willow Lake and caught good numbers of crappies and white bass (one-quarter to one pound), plus one small wiper (14 inches). They were caught on the dropshot rig using small plastic baits (1.5 and 3 inches) along secondary points in a cove (15 to 22 feet) and along the creek channel edges (35 to 42 feet). The surface water temperature back in the cove was approximately 36 to 37 degrees, and on the main lake it was about 35 degrees.

March 22

I took my son Chris and his friend fishing at Red Willow Lake, and we caught good numbers of crappies and white bass weighing between one-half and one pound. Most of them were caught along the creek channel edges (35 to 42 feet) and secondary points in a cove (15 to 22 feet). We used a dropshot rig with a small plastic bait ( 1.5 and 3 inches) such as Shad Assassin, Powerbait Bass Minnow, and Tube bait. The main lake surface temperature is approximately 34 degrees.

March 20

I guided on Red Willow Lake and we caught good numbers of crappies (over 100) weighing between one-half and one pound. We used a dropshot rig with a 1.5-inch shad assassin and 3-inch Powerbait Bass Minnow along a secondary point in a cove (18 to 22 feet), and along the creek channel edges near the mouth of a cove (38 to 42 feet). The main lake surface temperature is approximately 34 degrees, and back in the cove it was 37 degrees.

March 19

I took a friend fishing this afternoon at Red Willow Lake. We caught good numbers of crappies and white bass weighing between one-half and one pound. We used a dropshot rig with a small plastic minnow ( 1.5 and 2.5 inches) along the creek channel edges (35 to 40 feet), main lake points (20 to 35 feet), and secondary points in coves (18 to 22 feet). The main lake water temperature is approximately 33 degrees, and back in the coves it's approximately 34 degrees.

March 18

I went fishing at Red Willow Lake in the afternoon and caught good numbers of crappies up to 1 pound and white bass up to 3/4 pound. I used a dropshot rig with a small 1.5-inch Tiny Shad Assassin along the creek channel edges in depths of 38 to 40 feet. The surface water temperature is approximately 33 degrees and the water is very clear.

March 17

I guided on Swanson Lake and we caught 19 flathead catfish (7 master anglers 33" to 50"), plus white bass and crappies on jigging spoons, Cabela's Slab Tail Spinner, and a Silver Buddy (Bladebait). We fished along the river channel next to ridges in depths of 20 to 28 feet, and ridges next to dam areas. The water temperature is approximately 33 degrees.
