OCTOBER 2001

October 26
I guided at Enders Lake with clients and we caught good numbers of white bass up to 1.5 pounds on Cabela's Slab tail spinner and Strike King Rocket Shad around offshore dropoffs. Most of them were caught suspended between 5 to 15 feet below surface over 20 to 30 feet of water. The secret to catching these fish was swimming the lures in the same depth as the shad were suspended and following them. We also caught one nice walleye (24") on a Rocket Shad. The surface water temperature remains in the low 50s and visibility is approximately 24 inches.

October 25
I tried to guide on Red Willow in the morning with clients, but the cold and strong wind made it tough to fish. We went to a private sandpit in the afternoon to get out of the wind and caught channel catfish up to 39 inches on shrimp and largemouth bass between 14 and  22.75 inches slow rolling spinnerbaits along the drop off in 10 to 20 feet of water.

October 22, 23
I went fishing at Red Willow and caught largemouth bass between 12 and 21 inches on a jig-plastic trailer combo and spinnerbaits fishing around mouth of coves and secondary points back in coves (underwater stumps and rocky points) in depths of 10 feet or less. I'm still catching white bass and small wipers (up to 20") on slab tail spinner in depths of 15 to 20 feet around underwater humps. The surface water temperature is still in the mid 50s.

October 21
I went fishing at Red Willow with a friend and we caught largemouth bass up to 18 inches on jig-plastic trailer combos back in coves. We also caught wipers up to 26 inches on Cabela's Slab Tail Spinner around underwater humps in depth of 15 to 20 feet of water. The surface water temperature is still in the mid 50s.

October 19
I went fishing at Red Willow Lake with a friend, and we caught two Master Anglers largemouth bass (23" and 21") and five others between 12 and 19.5 inches on a jig-plastic trailer combo and a spinnerbait around main lake points and back in coves in depth of 10 feet of water or less. The key was the presence of schools of baitfish (shad) in these areas. I also caught a 15-inch smallmouth bass flipping a jig under the boat dock. We caught white bass on a Slab Tail Spinner around humps in 15 to 20 feet of water, and caught one wiper (23") on a spinnerbait, slow rolling it along a deep point. The water temperature is in the mid 50s and the visibility is approximately 15 inches.

October 18
I went fishing at a private sandpit in the afternoon and caught 35 largemouth bass between 12 and 20.5 inches. Three of the bass were Master Anglers (one 20.5", and two 20") caught on a spinnerbait and jig-pork frog combo. I was slow rolling the spinnerbait and crawling the jig -pork frog along the edges of the weedbeds in 15 feet or less of water.

October 17
I fished at a private sandpit for about one hour in late afternoon and caught five largemouth bass (14" to 19") and one Master Angler northern pike (39") on a spinnerbait. I was slow rolling the spinnerbait along the edges of deep weedbeds in depth of 15 feet or less of water.

October 16
I went fishing at Red Willow in late afternoon and caught largemouth bass between 12 and 18 inches on a jig-pork frog combo and a spinnerbait. I also caught a few smallmouth bass up to 14 inches on a spinnerbait off the face of the dam. I'm still catching white bass on a Slab Tail-Spinner around humps in 20 feet or less of water. The water temperature is in the mid 50s.

October 13
I fished in the Big Bass World Championship at Table Rock Lake in Missouri. It took a 3.69 lbs. spotted bass to win the tournament, and the guy (from Kentucky) caught the winning fish about 150 yards from where I was fishing on his fourth or fifth cast. I hooked and lost a spotted bass a short time later by the boat that would've weighed about 2.50 lbs. and that fish would have given me a 4th place finish! Hopefully next year I will qualify for the BBWC again and win it.

October 9
I fished at Red Willow Lake with my friend in the afternoon, and I caught three Master Angler largemouth bass, 23" and 22" on a crankbait, and 20" on a spinnerbait, around the mouths of coves and secondary points in coves. We also caught good numbers of white bass, and wipers up to 23.5", on Cabela's Slab Tail Spinner around underwater humps in depth of 15 feet or less. The water temperature is approximately 62 degrees with a visibility of 12 to 15 inches.

October 7
I fished at Red Willow Lake and caught largemouth bass up to 18" on crankbaits, a jig with plastic trailer, and spinnerbaits around mouths of coves and back in coves. The gizzard shads are moving back in the coves dues to cooler water temps. I also caught good numbers of white bass on a Slab Tail Spinner in 20 feet or less of water around underwater humps. The surface water temperature is approximately 60 degrees.

October 6
I went to the Angling Nebraska bass tournament at Sibilas Lake in Kansas and placed 5th with four  largemouth bass weighing a little under 11 pounds. I caught my fish on plastic baits around laydown trees along the creek channel. My tournament partner, Darrin Van Houten, and I won the Team Angler of the Year by accumulating the highest number of points during the regular season tournaments.

October 5
I fished at Red Willow Lake in the afternoon and caught two Master Anglers largemouth bass. I took a 25-incher on a 1/2 oz. rubberskirt jig and plastic trailer, and a 22-incher on a medium-diving crankbait fishing around main lake points in depth of 10 feet or less. I'm still catching good numbers of white bass and a few small wipers on aSlab Tail Spinner in 18 feet or less of water around underwater humps. The water surface temperature is in the lower 60s. The temperature dropped four degrees due to the cold fronts that came through the last few days.

October 2
I fished at Red Willow Lake in the late afternoon and caught 11 largemouth bass between 12 and 22 inches (2 Master Anglers - 22" and 21.5") on crankbaits and spinnerbaits fishing around main lake points and in coves in depth of 10 feet or less of water. Also caught good numbers of white bass on Cabela's Slab Tail Spinner in 20 feet  or less of water around underwater humps. The water visibility is now 12 to 16 inches and getting cleaner every day. The surface temperature is still in the mid 60s.

October 1
Went largemouth bass fishing at Red Willow in the late afternoon and caught 7 between 12" and 18" on crankbaits and spinnerbaits around the mouth of coves and secondary points in coves. Also caught a few off the dam with a few bonus smallmouth bass up to 15".Surface water temp. is in the mid 60s and the water visibility of 10 to 14".
