JULY 2001

July 30 - August 3
I guided on Red Willow with clients and we caught 23 Master Angler fish including 21 wipers (25.5" to 32"), 1 channel catfish (31"), and 1 northern pike (36"). All were caught on live gizzard shad. We're still fishing the same patterns as last week, and we're also catching good numbers of largemouth bass, white bass, and small wipers on small crankbaits and topwater plugs around main lake points next to deep water. The water temperature is in the low 80s and the water level is still dropping. Boaters should be alert for underwater hazards.

July 23 - 29
I guided on Red Willow Lake with clients and we caught 36 Master Angler fish including 31 wipers (25" to 31.5"), 4 channel catfish (31" to 31.5"), and 1 largemouth bass (20"). All were caught on live shad except the largemouth bass, which was caught on a topwater plug (Pop-R). We're fishing around the end of main lake points and underwater humps next to the creek channels in depth of 35 feet or less. Most of the wipers are suspended off bottom. We're also catching good numbers of white bass, small wipers, and largemouth bass on topwater plugs around points next to deep water when they are chasing shad on the surface. The water temperature is in the upper 70s and the lake water level is still dropping (approx. two feet the last 7 days.)

July 15 - 22
I guided on Red Willow Lake with clients and we caught 25 Master Angler fish including 20 wipers (24" to 33.5"), 3 largemouth bass (22", 21",and 20.5"), and 2 channel catfish (33" and 31"). All were caught on live bait (shad and shiners) except one wiper (29.5") caught on a jigging spoon. We're also catching good numbers of small white bass and small wipers on jigging spoons. We're fishing around mid-lake underwater humps next to the creek channels and end of deep main lake points. We're  catching lots of these fish suspended off bottom (15 to 20 feet with the bottom depth 25 to 35 feet). The fish are chasing shad in that mid-depth ranges. The water temperature is in the low 80s and the lake water level dropped over 3 feet in the last 7 days.

July 14
I fished in the Angling Nebraska bass tournament at Medicine Creek Reservoir and finished in 2nd Place with three largemouth bass weighting 8.10 pounds. The winner had three bass weighing a little over 10 pounds. I caught my fish on deep diving crankbaits and plastic worms around main lake points and lay down trees in the mouths of coves.

July 6 - 13
I guided on Red Willow with clients and we caught 42 Nebraska Master Angler fish including 34 wipers (24" to 31"), 6 channel catfish (31" to 35"), and 2 walleye (28.5"). They were all caught on live shiners and bluegills, except 3 wipers (29", 27", & 24") caught on a 1.5 oz. spinnerbait, and 2 wipers  (27" and 26.5") taken on topwater plugs. We fished around main lakes points and underwater humps in depths of 30 feet or less. I'm finding and catching lots of wipers suspended off bottom chasing shad in the mid-depth range. The main lake water temperature average is upper 70s.

July 1 - 3
I guided on Red Willow with my clients and we caught 23 Nebraska Master Angler fish including 21 wipers (24" to 30"), 1 walleye (28.5"), and 1 channel catfish (30"). They were all caught on live shiners except one wiper (27") caught on a 1.5 oz. spinnerbait. We fished the same patterns and depths as the week of June 25 through 30. I'm seeing more wipers schooling and suspending off bottom, chasing shad in the mid-depth range. The water temperature average is in the mid 70s.
